Peter Cullen, Voice of Optimus Prime and Eeyore, Dies at 85

Peter Cullen, the Canadian actor who gave life to Optimus Prime in the original Transformers TV series and to the melancholy donkey Eeyore in Disney’s Winnie the Pooh franchise, died at his Los Angeles home on August 27, 2026.

Cullen began his career on Canadian radio and television and then focused on voice acting. He first voiced Optimus Prime in 1984 for the animated series and later returned to the role for seven Hollywood Transformers films from 2007 to 2023. The deep, steadfast tone he used for the heroic leader has become a touchstone for fans of the franchise.

Throughout his life Cullen’s work spanned animated series such as Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, Spider‑Man, Donkey Kong, Alvin & the Chipmunks and Duck Tales, as well as video games and film.
