TROY, Ala. (AP) — A series of police pursuits have led to at least eight deaths around the country in less than a week amid growing calls from some law enforcement experts to reform policies governing high-speed chases.

In Texas, a man fleeing from police died Sunday after crashing into multiple vehicles. In Alabama, four individuals lost their lives when a car being chased by a state trooper veered off a rural road and crashed into a tree on Friday night. Additionally, three deaths occurred during separate police pursuits in California last week.

These recent incidents highlight a disturbing trend as hundreds of fatalities occur annually during police chases. In 2023, a report from the Police Executive Research Forum, a prominent think tank on policing, recommended limiting car chases to situations where a violent crime has been committed and where there is an imminent threat to the public.

According to Amanda Wasden, a spokesperson for the Alabama agency, the crash occurred late Friday night when the driver attempted to flee on a rural road. None of the occupants were wearing seatbelts and were thrown from the vehicle upon impact. All four—comprising the driver and two passengers, one of whom was a 17-year-old—were pronounced dead at the scene.

In Fort Worth, Texas, another tragic event unfolded as police pursued a vehicle for driving without headlights, leading to a fatal crash involving the fleeing driver and several other vehicles. The police department confirmed that the fleeing driver died in the incident.

Notably, the Pomona Police Department in Southern California reported that officers chased a domestic violence suspect whose vehicle collided with another, resulting in the deaths of a couple just days shy of welcoming their new child.

In another instance, deputies in Orange County attempted to intercept a stolen U-Haul truck, which ultimately collided with an SUV, killing the driver and critically injuring her three passengers.

The concerning pattern of fatalities during police pursuits serves as a catalyst for continued discussions on public safety and law enforcement policies, with experts urging more careful consideration around the initiation and execution of high-speed chases.
