Donald Trump is set to become the first sitting US president to have his signature featured on US banknotes, as announced by the Treasury Department.

His signature will appear alongside that of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in an unprecedented decision aligned with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J Trump than US dollar bills bearing his name, Bessent stated, highlighting the significance of this development.

This move is part of a series of efforts by the Trump administration to closely associate the President's name with various government initiatives and public infrastructure.

The initial run of $100 banknotes featuring both Trump and Bessent’s signatures will start printing in June, with additional denominations to follow later.

Currently, US banknotes are printed with the signatures of former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Treasurer Lynn Malerba.

Traditionally, banknotes have displayed only the signatures of treasury officials since 1861, but this change signals a new direction in currency printing under the Trump administration.

Reflecting on the 250th anniversary, Bessent commented that this currency initiative serves as a powerful tribute to the nation’s historic accomplishments, as well as to President Trump himself.

Brandon Beach, the current US Treasurer, assured that currency will remain a symbol of prosperity, strength, and the unshakable spirit of the American people.

The year marks 250 years since the 13 American colonies declared their independence from Britain.

Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California and a known critic of Trump, responded negatively to the announcement, indicating this will only highlight economic difficulties for many Americans.

Earlier this month, a federal arts commission also approved a commemorative 24-karat gold coin featuring Trump to celebrate the nation’s anniversary. Additionally, during his first term, Trump's name was included on support cheques distributed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
