In brief

Three journalists were killed and several wounded in an Israeli airstrike targeting a structure associated with Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon, igniting international outrage and accusations of war crimes.

In quieter times, Hasbaya Village, a picturesque retreat in southern Lebanon, housed visitors drawn to its charming bungalows and breathtaking mountain scenery. Recently, however, the village has served as temporary quarters for journalists keen to report on the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Following a month of intensified military activity, 18 journalists from various news agencies had taken refuge in these bungalows, aiming to stay close to the action while avoiding direct exposure to danger during off-hours.The night of the attack, which occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on a Friday, turned deadly as an Israeli airstrike devastated three bungalows. Eyewitness reports described the chaos and destruction as the airstrike left at least three journalists dead and several more injured while they were asleep. The incident sparked immediate condemnation from Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Minister of Information Ziad T. Makary, both of whom labeled the attack a “war crime.” Mikati, expressing outrage on social media, stated that the strike was a calculated move to intimidate journalists covering the hostilities and to obscure the realities of the ongoing conflict. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) defended their actions, asserting that the airstrike targeted a military structure used by Hezbollah operatives and was executed based on actionable intelligence about guerrilla activity at that location. The IDF maintained that the strike was carried out with due regard for operational military objectives. As tensions continue to flare in the region, this tragic loss serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by media professionals trying to inform the world amidst the chaos of war.
