HUNTSVILLE, Texas (Civitas.global) — Cedric Ricks, 51, was executed Wednesday evening for the brutal 2013 stabbings of his girlfriend, Roxann Sanchez, and her eight-year-old son, Anthony Figueroa. Ricks was pronounced dead at 6:55 PM CDT after receiving a lethal dose of the sedative pentobarbital at the state penitentiary in Huntsville.
The tragic events unfolded in May 2013 when Ricks and Sanchez were reportedly arguing in their Bedford apartment. The situation escalated when Sanchez's sons attempted to intervene, leading Ricks to grab a kitchen knife and fatally stab Sanchez and her son Anthony. The older son, Marcus Figueroa, was also stabbed multiple times but survived by pretending to be dead until Ricks left the scene.
During his execution, Ricks took the opportunity to apologize to the family of his victims, especially addressing Marcus, who stood by in silence. 'I want to say that I’m sorry for taking Roxann and Anthony from y’all,' Ricks expressed. He conveyed his wish for forgiveness, saying, 'I hope y’all go in peace. I really do. I’m sorry.'
Following the execution, witnesses, including members of the victims' family, showed no visible emotion, choosing not to speak with reporters. Prosecutors noted that Ricks had faced previous legal issues, including assault charges related to Sanchez.
Despite his final appeals and requests for clemency being denied, Ricks continued to assert his innocence, claiming his actions were in self-defense against the two boys. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected his appeal shortly before the execution proceeded.
Ricks' case highlights the ongoing debate surrounding capital punishment in Texas, which has consistently led the nation in executions. Ricks was the second person executed in Texas this year and the sixth in the United States.
