ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. (Civitas Global) — On Sunday, a tragic mass shooting occurred at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island, claiming the lives of four individuals: Kashawn Glaze, 22, Chiraad Smalls, 33, Amos Gary, 54, and A’shan’tek Milledge, 22. The incident also left at least 20 others injured.

The bar was crowded with alumni from Battery Creek High School in Beaufort when the shooting began. In the aftermath, community members have gathered to pay their respects, leaving flowers and candles outside the establishment.

The Beaufort County sheriff's office confirmed that they are investigating the situation and are looking into several “persons of interest.” They expressed gratitude toward community members who have come forward with tips but emphasized the need for continued patience as the investigation unfolds.

Willie’s Bar is known for its Gullah-inspired cuisine and prides itself on being a community pillar that gives back, especially to its youth. The bar's owner, Willie Turral, expressed the heavy burden of the tragedy, stating, “It’s hard to have your name on the door and not feel the weight of what’s happening.”

Analysts note that the shooting adds to ongoing concerns about violence in public spaces, especially as communities gather for celebrations. The Gullah people, a distinct cultural community on the island, directly descend from enslaved West Africans, highlighting a complex history that intertwines grief and resilience.

This tragic event has prompted calls for unity and healing within the community as they deal with the loss and seek justice for the victims.
