Dozens of people are missing and one has died after a boat carrying migrants sank near the border between Thailand and Malaysia.

The vessel is believed to have capsized near the southern Thai island of Ko Tarutao on Thursday, as reported by the Malaysian Coast Guard.

So far, ten individuals have been rescued, and the body of a woman was recovered from the sea.

According to maritime officials, the victims were among a larger group of around 300 individuals who were initially traveling on a larger boat before splitting into smaller vessels as they approached Malaysia.

The rescued individuals include three men from Myanmar, two Rohingya men, and one Bangladeshi man, as documented by Malaysia's state-run agency Bernama. The recovered body was identified as that of a Rohingya woman.

Efforts to locate more survivors are ongoing.

The Rohingya community, predominantly Muslim, has fled Myanmar in vast numbers to escape persecution, facing severe hardships in refugee camps in Bangladesh, which continue to drive them toward dangerous maritime journeys in search of safer lives in Malaysia.

Officials have reported that many individuals fleeing have paid over $3,000 (£2,300) for their passage, highlighting the desperation faced by these vulnerable populations.
