A Palestinian man was shot dead by an Israeli during a settler attack on a village in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday evening.
A relative said Alaa Khalid Subeih, 28, was killed as he tried to defend a greenhouse from the settlers in Tayasir in the northern West Bank. A senior UN official also confirmed he was killed by a settler.
The Israeli military stated that he was shot by an off-duty soldier and accused him of throwing stones.
Tayasir has seen increased violence from settlers, with Israel's settlements in the occupied West Bank deemed illegal under international law.
The killing occurred amid warnings from former security officials in Israel about government-sponsored Jewish terrorism escalating in the West Bank, coinciding with government approvals for more settlements.
Tayasir is an area of the West Bank meant to be under the security jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority. Last month, a CNN crew was detained while reporting on violence in the region.
Saeb Subeih described Alaa as an exemplary young man, asserting that settlers were operating under army protection when they attacked the village.
Alaa's cousin reported he was executed while defending his property, and the Israeli military has not returned his body to his family.
The UN Human Rights Office expressed concern about increasing violence by settlers and stated the Israeli government has granted them impunity. Settler violence incidents have reportedly surged in recent months.
On the same day of the incident, a Palestinian Red Crescent ambulance crew was prevented from accessing Tayasir by Israeli soldiers, further complicating the humanitarian response to such incidents.
The Israeli military did not provide clarification on contrasting statements regarding Subeih's status, asserting that he was either a terrorist or a civilian in different communications.
This tragic event highlights the deepening crisis in the West Bank and the frustrations surrounding settler actions, government policies, and security measures affecting Palestinian populations.
