Hamas Declines Disarmament Proposal Amidst Ongoing Gaza Tensions
Hamas has rejected the disarmament plan proposed by Nickolay Mladenov, a key figure in President Trump's Gaza peace efforts, according to a senior Palestinian official. The official criticized Mladenov for perceived bias towards Israel and stated that Hamas is conditioned upon specific terms before engaging in the next phase of ceasefire negotiations.
The official remarked that Hamas is unwilling to discuss demilitarization until Israel demonstrates compliance with previously agreed conditions from the ceasefire established in October. Israel has indicated a refusal to move forward on peace negotiations without significant progress on Hamas's disarmament.
As negotiations continue in Cairo, a Hamas delegation was scheduled to meet with Egypt's intelligence chief to potentially address these issues more thoroughly.
The first phase of the U.S. peace plan included a cessation of hostilities, the return of hostages held by Hamas, and a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. However, progress has stagnated since mid-January, leading to serious concerns about the humanitarian situation in the region.
Hamas officials have voiced that a halt to all Israeli military activities and the fulfillment of obligations regarding humanitarian aid are essential prerequisites before they will consider discussing the next steps of the peace plan.
Over the past weeks, the situation has deteriorated, with ongoing violence resulting in thousands of casualties among civilians. Palestinian factions indicate that they expect a multifaceted solution to the conflict that secures the rights of the Palestinian people, rather than temporary arrangements.
