Former National Football League (NFL) running back Doug Martin has died aged 36 while in police custody in California.
The Oakland Police Department stated that the former American football star - who played for teams including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers - died following an alleged home break-in and a subsequent struggle with officers on Saturday.
While attempting to detain the individual, a brief struggle ensued, the department noted, emphasizing that Martin became unresponsive and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
His family confirmed the unfortunate news and stated that the exact cause of his death remains unconfirmed.

Born in Oakland, California, Martin was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' first-round pick in the 2012 NFL draft. During his inaugural season, he made an impressive mark by rushing for 1,454 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns.
Over his seven-year career, Martin spent six seasons with the Buccaneers, earning the nickname Muscle Hamster due to his remarkable strength, especially considering his 5ft 9in (1.75m) height.
Despite his talents, he faced challenges, including injuries and a four-game suspension in 2016 after testing positive for a banned substance, for which he later sought treatment.
Martin also had a brief stint with the Oakland Raiders towards the end of his career in 2018.
