Authorities in Sweden have charged a convicted terrorist in connection with the brutal execution of a Jordanian pilot by ISIS.
Swedish prosecutors have officially charged Osama Krayem, a 32-year-old citizen previously convicted of participating in terrorist acts in Europe, for his alleged involvement in the horrific execution of Jordanian pilot Moaz al-Kasasbeh in 2015. Krayem, currently incarcerated, is facing charges of war crimes and terrorism in relation to the pilot’s death, which was tragically publicized in a disturbing video released by ISIS. This announcement comes as the trial is scheduled to start on June 4.
Al-Kasasbeh was captured after his aircraft was downed in Syria in December 2014, during combat operations against ISIS. Efforts were underway to secure his release through a potential prisoner exchange at the time of his death. According to Swedish authorities, Krayem is said to have participated actively in the execution, allegedly forcing Kasasbeh into a metal cage before it was set ablaze.
Originally from Malmö, Sweden, Krayem reportedly traveled to Syria in 2014 to fight for ISIS. In recent years, he has been sentenced for his involvement in multiple terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels, which together claimed numerous lives. Krayem has been transferred from France to Sweden to face the charges stemming from al-Kasasbeh’s death, which shocked the world and particularly resonated with the Jordanian public.
