At a recent retreat in New York’s Hudson Valley, a group of activists was noted for their infectious laughter amid a gathering of various teams, prompting a curious onlooker to ask, 'Who are you guys?'

This lively group consisted of activists devoted to addressing worsening climate change, typically a subject mired in a narrative of doom and gloom.

But around the world, activists, educators, and psychologists are tackling one of humanity's toughest challenges through joy, dancing, hugging, and, most notably, laughter. Different seminars, books, and programs are amplifying the importance of community and joy over the notion of sacrifice, changing the conversation around climate action.

Joy is vital and perhaps even holy in these challenging times, said Katharine Wilkinson, an activist leading the Hudson Valley seminar that gained attention from other groups. It's about engaging in the shimmer and shimmy even as the world experiences turbulence.

Wilkinson and her colleagues aim to harness joy as a driving force in the fight against fossil fuels and the emissions that heat up the planet. During a speech, she described joy as a potent channel through which we can offer gifts during uncertain times.

Activism and Climate Change

Several psychologists are embracing this approach, recognizing that humor helps with stress management. Laughter has been shown to physiologically reduce tension, suggesting that enjoyment can pave the way for deeper social connections. Julia Kim-Cohen, a professor of clinical psychology, highlighted this phenomenon, stating that sharing laughter can be deeply ingrained in human interactions.

However, acknowledging the grim realities of climate change is still crucial. Christiana Figueres, who played an instrumental role in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, believes that facing suffering and grief allows for transformative change. Embracing the full emotional spectrum — including joy — is essential to enact meaningful progress.

In her seminars, Figueres combines dance and discussions about acceptances of challenges that society faces. The aim is to balance daunting statistics with messages of joy.

As participants embrace the depth of their emotions, they create a space for lightheartedness, encouraging humor and positive engagements. In a world where sacrifice is often the focus, this rejuvenated paradigm finds strength in joy, a message that resonates significantly in today's activism landscape.
