Heatwave, Red Alerts Across France
In a sweeping move that covers 49 of the country’s 96 regions, France’s National Meteorological Service, Météo‑France, has issued a red heat alert as temperatures climb above 40 °C. The outbound mercury is expected to touch 43 °C in Bordeaux with other western counties registering highs between 36 to 40 °C as the heatwave intensifies.
Education Impact
The Ministry of Education reports that 845 schools have been shut for the day, and a further 1,800 institutions permit pupils to finish classes early to keep them away from the searing sun. Such closures are in line with public health advice that the heat can aggravate pre‑existing conditions.
Transport Adjustments
France’s national rail operator, SNCF, is urging vulnerable citizens to postpone travel this week, while several Parisian train lines already reduced service on Monday as part of a broader move to keep passengers safe. Belgium’s corresponding rail service hinted at cancelling peak‑hour trains for Monday and Tuesday due to the heat.
Music Festival and Alcohol Ban
The heat wave hit a weekend where temperatures topped 40 °C at the nationwide Fête de la Musique. As a result, an alcohol ban has been imposed for the event as a precaution against heat‑related health risks among crowds.
Health Warnings and Deaths
Health Minister Stéphanie Rist warned on TV1 Info that many citizens would “suffer” during this period and urged people to stay alert for relatives and vulnerable neighbours. In the Gironde region of the south‑west, authorities reported three deaths – aged between 80 and 95 years – that were partially attributed to intense heat.
European Context
The heatwave is not confined to France; record temperatures are expected across Europe, with Madrid forecast to reach 39 °C and Rome to hit 37 °C. France remains the country experiencing the broadest heat‑related emergency, having 63 million people in total affected by the alerts as of the latest update.
