What happened in the Berlin Pride attack?
At around 10pm local time a white vehicle drove into a crowded Pride parade in Tiergarten Park near the Brandenburg Gate, causing a chaotic scene.
Police first received a report of a vehicle striking the crowd, after which the parade, which had drawn hundreds of thousands of supporters, was immediately cancelled and the area evacuated.
The assault left one woman dead and 16 people injured, including several who were stabbed, at about 01:00 the next morning.
Who is the suspect?
Police have identified the 21‑year‑old suspect as Abdul B, whose surname is withheld under German law. Images released by the police show him wearing a black hooded top and white trousers; he is described as linked to Islamist circles.
Authorities have warned the public not to approach the suspect, who may still be armed. A short time after the attack, an abandoned vehicle crashed into a tree and police are searching the city for the suspect.
Where did the attack occur?
The incident took place on Ahornsteig, a wooded path in Tiergarten Park, where the Christopher Street Day parade was passing en route to the Brandenburg Gate. The attack occurred against the backdrop of the city’s Victory Column monument.
Police have called on witnesses to come forward with information while the suspect remains at large. A search involving thousands of officers, including contingents from surrounding German states, continues across Berlin.
