CBS Fires Veteran 60 Minutes Correspondent Amid Leadership Shake-Up

On Tuesday, CBS News decided to terminate veteran 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley, 68, following a heated briefing with the show’s new executive producer, Nick Bilton.

During the meeting—recorded by the network’s Status website—Pelley publicly criticized editor‑in‑chief Bari Weiss, claiming she was murdering the program and that Bilton, whose background lies in technology journalism and filmmaking, was underqualified for the role.

Bilton responded via a termination letter that Pleyer's hostility was a performative display of hostility and indicated the veteran journalist had no interest in contributing to the show’s future. Pelley, in turn, said the program had lost its DNA under the new leadership and that CBS was being pressured to accommodate political bias.

The dismissal comes just five days after Weiss sent staff a memo urging a new approach to the flagship program, including the possibility of extending beyond its 60‑minute format. This follows a week of leadership changes that have seen multiple personnel departures amid disputes over editorial direction.

Scott Pelley began his CBS career in 1989. He served as the network’s chief White House correspondent from 1997 to 1999 and anchored the CBS Evening News from 2011 to 2017. He has earned 51 Emmy awards, underscoring his status as one of CBS’s most respected journalists.

The incident highlights the continuing tension at CBS as the organization seeks to redefine its editorial priorities while maintaining the high standards that have long underpinned 60 Minutes.
