Recent satellite images have revealed the alarming scale of two wildfires spreading in southern California, particularly the Sandy Fire, which ignited on Monday morning in Simi Valley, according to California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Captured shortly after noon local time on that day, satellite imagery depicts a large plume of smoke rising just south of the city. By Tuesday morning, fire officials reported that 750 firefighters were on the ground, being assisted by helicopters equipped to drop water on hotspots.

The cause of the Sandy Fire has been traced to an incident where an individual reportedly struck a rock with a tractor, igniting the blaze. Unfortunately, the fire has since spread across 1,364 acres (550 hectares), with no sections currently contained, as warned by officials.

NASA's wildfire monitoring platform has indicated that active hotspots continue to advance further south, raising concerns for local communities. Consequently, more than 10,000 homes have been evacuated, with an additional 3,500 under evacuation warnings extending into nearby Los Angeles County.

Mayor Karen Bass mentioned that while authorities do not anticipate the fire reaching Los Angeles, precautionary warnings have been issued. High winds contributed to the fire's rapid spread initially, although conditions improved later in the day.

Classes in the Simi Valley Unified School District were canceled on Tuesday as a precautionary measure. It is worth noting that past wildfires in similar regions have had devastating repercussions, with approximately 30 fatalities reported in January 2025 due to fast-spreading fires.

In addition to the Sandy Fire, another significant blaze is burning on Santa Rosa Island, which has engulfed over 14,600 acres (6000 hectares) of the Channel Islands National Park. The U.S. Coast Guard has confirmed the rescue of a 67-year-old man from the island's shore as firefighting efforts continue.

Both fires are being closely monitored, and authorities remain on high alert as they prioritize the safety of residents and the containment of the fires.
