Ukraine and Russia have each accused one another of hundreds of violations of a short ceasefire coinciding with Orthodox Easter celebrations.

The Ukrainian military reported that Russian forces committed 2,299 violations since the truce began at 16:00 local time on Saturday, including shooting four unarmed soldiers.

In contrast, the Russian defense ministry stated that Ukrainian forces committed 1,971 violations, which included three attempted counter-attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier stated his nation's forces would respond symmetrically to Russian attacks during the ceasefire, calling Easter a time of peace. He expressed hope that the truce could extend beyond Easter to promote stalled peace negotiations, but Russia rejected the request, indicating attacks would resume on Monday.

Ukrainian sources reported that Russian troops executed four Ukrainian soldiers after the ceasefire was enacted, an act described as a grave violation of international humanitarian law. Ukrainian authorities have released drone footage showing four bodies lying in a clearing.

The conflict between the two nations, now ongoing since 2022, has low expectations surrounding the ceasefire as both sides accuse each other of continued military actions.

Bilateral prisoner exchanges did occur over the ceasefire period, with each side reportedly swapping 175 prisoners, including seven civilians.

As the Easter festivities continue, civilians and soldiers alike on the frontlines are left to grapple with the reality of ongoing hostility, with many doubting the prospect of lasting peace.
