LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — In a significant development, federal prosecutors have moved to dismiss charges against former police officers Joshua Jaynes and Kyle Meany, who were accused of falsifying a warrant that led to the deadly raid on Breonna Taylor's apartment in March 2020. In a court filing made on Friday, prosecutors stated that their investigation concluded it was in the interest of justice to drop the charges.

Previously, judges had reduced the initial felony charges against both officers to misdemeanors, ruling that there was insufficient evidence connecting their alleged misconduct directly to the tragic death of Taylor. Following these rulings, prosecutors deemed it appropriate to abandon the cases altogether.

Breonna Taylor was killed when officers executed a no-knock warrant looking for a suspect who had already moved out of the apartment. During the raid, her boyfriend fired at the officers, prompting them to return fire, which resulted in Taylor’s death.

The charges against officers were initially filed under the Biden administration, highlighting the ongoing scrutiny of police practices in cases of deadly force. In contrast, the Trump administration's Department of Justice has sought to reduce the sentence of the only officer currently imprisoned related to Taylor's death. Lawyers for the implicated officers have not yet commented on the latest developments.
