Christa Pike Survives Execution Attempt, Remains Conscious
Christa Pike, 50, was convicted of murdering Colleen Slemmer in 1995 and sentenced to death. In the middle of a second lethal injection last week, authorities reported that the 2‑injection attempt failed, and Pike was transferred to a Nashville hospital for medical care.
Pike’s lawyers confirmed that she is conscious and can speak, though she remains handcuffed while medical staff treat her. The incident has drawn renewed scrutiny to the use of pentobarbitol in executions and the oversight of capital punishment protocols in Tennessee.
The death penalty remains a contentious issue in the United States, with supporters citing deterrence and victims’ families’ closure, while critics argue it is inhumane and prone to irreparable errors. This case may prompt further legal challenges and policy reviews as authorities investigate the failure.
