ATLANTA (AP) — The Georgia General Assembly ended its session early Friday without reaching an agreement on how to update the state's voting system, raising concerns about the future of elections in this critical political battleground.
With a July deadline looming, lawmakers' inability to provide a solution after extended discussions has led to uncertainty about the voting process for November's elections. This situation could potentially lead to disputes in courts or the need for a special legislative session.
“They’ve abdicated their responsibility,” remarked Democratic state representative Saira Draper, criticizing the Republican-majority legislature for inaction.
Georgia's current election infrastructure relies on Dominion Voting machines, which create ballots featuring a QR code read by scanners during vote tallying. These machines have faced persistent criticism from supporters of Donald Trump following the 2020 election, culminating in legislation enacted in 2024 that bars using barcodes for counting votes.
Despite this legislation, counties must still utilize the existing machines, as lawmakers failed to allocate funding or agree upon a new replacement. House Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Victor Anderson expressed concerns about statutory conflicts arising from the current voting laws come July 1.
The lack of action has prompted fears that Georgia may need to implement hand-marked paper ballots during the November elections—a transition that local election officials believe would be practically impossible in such a short time frame.
As tensions escalate, lawmakers have also faced criticism for prioritizing political gains over practical solutions that would secure the integrity and efficiency of the voting process.
“If anyone is resilient and can get the job done, it’s all of us election officials, but the legislators need to work with us,” voiced Paulding County Election Supervisor Deidre Holden. “They need to understand what we do before making laws that are basically unachievable for us.”
