Gunfire and Explosions Raid Niamey Airport Amid Rising Turmoil

Early Thursday, gunfire and explosions erupted at Diori Hamani International Airport, the main gateway to Niger’s capital. Residents heard shots for roughly two hours, with authorities citing that the assault was contained by the army. No casualties were reported after reinforcements arrived, and troops reportedly chased away attackers who abandoned their weapons.

The incident follows a January attack on the same airport, when suspected militants struck, leaving four soldiers wounded and 20 dead. The Nigerien government, governed by a military junta formed after a coup three years ago, has blamed external actors – accusing France, Benin, and Ivory Coast of supporting the violence – while thanking Russia for help in thwarting the earlier assault.

In the wake of repeated raids, Niger’s forces have demolished neighbourhoods around the airport, extended fence perimeter, and installed over 350 cameras. The region remains stricken by an insurgency involving Islamist jihadists linked to Al‑Qaeda and the Islamic State, whose presence threatens stability across the Sahel.

As tensions persist, the international community watches Niger’s fragile security situation, which could influence the Sahel’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.
