Residents of Niamey reported gunfire emerging from the entrance of the city’s international airport around 06:00 local time (05:00 GMT). Reuters, which noted accompanying explosions, said the shooting lasted roughly an hour.
The incident follows a January assault on the same airport that was attributed to Islamist militants linked to the Islamic State. No group has claimed responsibility for this latest episode and the government has yet to issue a statement.
Niger has been fighting a decade‑long insurgency by jihadist groups, and the military junta that seized power in 2023 remains focused on quelling such violence. The country’s security forces are currently probing the origins of the sudden gunfire.
Sources indicate that the shots were fired at the airport’s main entrance, but details about who was involved or the motive remain unclear. Local witnesses describe the sound as intense and brief, with no damage to aircraft or infrastructure reported.
As the region’s security situation remains volatile, authorities are reviewing protocols at key transport hubs to safeguard against future attacks.
