Background

Kenya has confirmed its first case of Ebola, a disease that has been ravaging the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for months. The patient is a Kenyan national who has lived in DRC for the last seven years. He fell ill in late June, received treatment in several hospitals there, and returned to Nairobi on a flight that landed on Saturday.

The Death

After undergoing normal public screening at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the patient was transferred to a Nairobi hospital by a family member. Tests conducted there confirmed positive for the Ebola Bundibugyo virus. The patient died in the hospital a few days later, marking the first Ebola death in Kenya.

Outbreak Context

Health officials say more than 4,000 people have died in the DRC since the outbreak began this year, making it the second most deadly Ebola epidemic on record. The spread across borders underscores the need for stringent health screenings and a coordinated international response.

What’s Next

Kenyan authorities will continue to monitor travelers from high‑risk regions and enforce strict health protocols at major entry points. The international community is urged to support vaccination and research initiatives in both DRC and neighboring countries.
