PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan synagogue on Thursday posted photos on social media of major fire damage caused by a man who drove a pickup truck into the building last week before taking his own life.

One harrowing image shows tables of fruits and snacks left untouched when the attack occurred near an early childhood education room at Temple Israel in suburban Detroit. The pictures feature loose wires, an exposed ceiling, and walls blackened by fire, alongside ruined celebratory photographs.

In a statement on Facebook, the synagogue explained that it chose to share these images after noticing other media portrayals had inflicted harm on the survivors of last week’s attack. They insisted, “This is our sacred space, and we will be the ones to tell its story.”

Ayman Ghazali, 41, smashed his pickup truck through the synagogue's doors on March 12, striking a security guard after sitting in the parking lot for two hours. Gunfire was exchanged between him and the security staff before he killed himself. The FBI noted that the truck was loaded with commercial-grade fireworks and several jugs of gasoline.

Fortunately, no children or staff were injured in the assault.

According to the FBI, a motive has not yet been determined. However, Ghazali’s ex-wife had contacted police shortly before the attack to express concerns about his state of mind, claiming he appeared distraught and suicidal. A naturalized U.S. citizen, Ghazali had lost family members in a recent Israeli airstrike in Lebanon.
