LELAND, Miss. — In the wake of a mass shooting that left six people dead in Leland, Mississippi, local law enforcement and community leaders are urging citizens to assist in identifying potential suspects. The tragic event unfolded last Friday night during a homecoming celebration in the downtown area, shortly after a high school football game.

A press conference is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at Leland City Hall, where police, along with officials from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the FBI, will provide updates on the ongoing search for suspects.

Mayor John Lee expressed the community's grief, stating, Families are still grieving, and they don’t have closure right now. We’re talking about funerals not even prepared yet. The shooting resulted in the deaths of six individuals and left more than a dozen others injured.

The shooting incident has been described as the deadliest of several shootings that weekend across Mississippi, coinciding with homecoming events in multiple towns, including those at Alcorn State and Jackson State universities. Authorities indicate the shootings may have stemmed from a disagreement among attendees.

Despite several suspects being charged with capital murder, the investigation remains active, with the FBI actively sharing images of individuals they want to question regarding the shooting. The mayor emphasized the unusual nature of such violence in the community, stating, This is not anything that’s happened anywhere close to our community ever before. Witnesses recall scenes of chaos as they reported seeing individuals wounded and bleeding.

As the town continues to grapple with the tragedy, community leaders stress the importance of public involvement in ensuring justice is served and safety is restored.
