A Russian warship fired warning shots at a UK‑registered motor‑less yacht in the English Channel on Tuesday, just 500 metres away from the vessel, according to witnesses aboard the yacht.

\

The incident happened around 11:40 BST between the Isle of Wight and Normandy, near a point 20 nautical miles from the coast. In foggy conditions, the yacht drifted towards the patrol ship without a motor.

\

After sounding an audible alarm, the warship discharged the salvo of warning shots within a range of roughly 500 yards (457 m). No injuries or damage were reported by the yacht’s occupants.

\

The Ministry of Defence said it is investigating the event. Official statements confirm that the incident is being treated as an isolated occurrence, unrelated to a Royal Marine interception of a Russian shadow fleet tanker that took place earlier this week.

\

Russian warships frequently pass through the Channel and are routinely monitored by Royal Navy vessels. The Admiral Grigorovich had been shadowed by HMS Mersey and HMS Tyne over the weekend, after being observed off the coast of Brest, France.

\

NATO sources have indicated that the frigate escorted shadow fleet vessels through the waterway on at least six occasions, including the recent week. Satellite imagery suggests a repair vessel, the PM‑82, supplied the frigate with food, water and other essentials, enabling extended stays at sea and escort operations.

\

Russia’s use of auxiliary craft like the PM‑82 to support larger warships raises diplomatic concerns amid the UK’s ongoing backing of Ukraine. The Marine and Admiralty are monitoring the region closely to ensure maritime security and compliance with international norms.
