FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The FBI reported that a suspicious package was found outside MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa earlier this week, raising concerns due to the presence of possible energetic materials. An analysis of the materials is still pending, as stated in a social media announcement from the FBI Tampa office.
Energetic materials comprise a substantial amount of chemical energy and can include explosives, fuels, or propellants. Further details on the type of materials discovered in the package, located next to the base Visitor Center, were not disclosed.
In response to the situation, the base initiated a shelter-in-place order on Wednesday after a threat was identified, emphasizing their commitment to security and safety measures. MacDill officials stated, We take all threats seriously and are taking appropriate measures to prioritize the safety and security of our installation. However, specifics of these measures were not revealed.
The shelter-in-place order was terminated approximately two hours later, yet the base remains on high alert.
On Tuesdays, MacDill operated under Force Protection Charlie (FPCON CHARLIE), the second-highest military security status, permitting proactive security measures. Personnel were urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately.
MacDill Air Force Base is crucial to U.S. military operations in the Middle East via the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which is based there. Heightened alert levels have been observed at U.S. installations since the onset of the conflict in Iran.
Last week, a tragic incident occurred when all six crew members of a KC-135 refueling aircraft perished in a crash during operations against Iran. Three of the deceased were affiliated with the 6th Air Refueling Wing at MacDill.
