Zimbabwean opposition lawmaker Desire Moyo has died after the vehicle he was travelling in hit an elephant, according to local media.
The accident took place in the early hours of Friday morning on the Bulawayo-Gweru highway while Mr. Moyo and four other MPs were en route. Moyo died instantly, while his colleagues sustained injuries, as reported by state broadcaster ZBC.
Tributes have begun to flow for the beloved poet, recognized for his contributions to Zimbabwe’s arts community, who passed away just a day prior to his 46th birthday.
Mr. Moyo was a member of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) and served on the sport, recreation, arts, and culture committee in the Zimbabwean parliament. His constituency, Nkulumane in Bulawayo, expressed profound sorrow over his loss.
Fellow CCC member Discent Bajila recounted details of the accident, revealing that the vehicle struck the elephant on its backside, leading to a violent reaction from the animal that caused significant damage to the car and ultimately resulted in Moyo's fatal injuries.
The area where the crash occurred is known for elephant crossings, raising questions about wildlife and road safety in the region.
Colleagues and constituents reflected on his hard work and dedication, with MP Caston Matewu noting, The people of Nkulumani have been robbed of this great man. Mayor David Coltart remembered Moyo as an iconic leader and champion of the arts.
In recognition of his legacy, Moyo was also identified as an award-winning poet and educator who devoted his life to fostering Zimbabwe’s creative sector. Those injured in the crash have since been hospitalized.
