NEW YORK — A tragic accident occurred late Sunday night at LaGuardia Airport when an Air Canada regional jet collided with a fire truck on the runway, resulting in the death of the pilot and co-pilot, and injuring several others. The incident took place around 11:45 p.m. as the jet was landing after arriving from Montreal. The fire truck was on a prior assignment dealing with a concerning odor on another aircraft when the collision occurred.

Audio recordings from the control tower revealed that the fire truck was initially given clearance to cross the runway but was then instructed to stop as traffic approached. Unfortunately, the instructions did not reach the truck in time, leading to the fatal accident.

Photos from the site depict the jet's nose crushed and its cockpit severely damaged, while some passengers were evacuated using emergency stairways as the fire truck lay overturned nearby.

Only the crew members of the Air Canada flight were confirmed dead, and while around 40 others were treated for injuries at local hospitals, most have now been released. The two fire truck employees sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

LaGuardia Airport, which ranked as the 19th busiest in the U.S. in 2024, has been temporarily closed due to this incident, disrupting air travel and straining an already burdened system amidst ongoing government funding issues impacting airport operations.

This incident highlights the complex challenges that air traffic controllers face daily, particularly during busy periods exacerbated by staffing shortages resulting from government actions.
