ATLANTA (AP) — An Atlanta man has been charged in connection with a series of violent attacks that occurred within hours and resulted in the deaths of two women and left a man in critical condition. The case has drawn heightened scrutiny from the Trump administration due to one victim's ties to the DHS.
The tragedy began when Lauren Bullis, a 26-year-old Department of Homeland Security employee, was walking her dog in Decatur around 1 a.m. when she was shot multiple times, ultimately succumbing to her injuries.
Authorities have identified Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a U.K. native who gained U.S. citizenship in 2022, as the primary suspect in this case. Following Bullis's death, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin released a statement expressing his condolences and highlighting the suspect's prior criminal history.
These acts of pure evil have devastated our Department and my prayers are with the families of the victims, Mullin wrote. The victims' families have since shared memories of Bullis, describing her as kind and compassionate.
In a separate incident, a 49-year-old homeless man was shot multiple times near a grocery store in Brookhaven, leading police to believe he was also a random target.
Adon Abel was apprehended following a traffic stop and is facing multiple charges, including malice murder. His initial court appearance was waived, and there’s currently no record of legal representation for him.
Mullin's statement sparked discussions on the complexities of immigration policies surrounding individuals with criminal records and the scrutiny they are subjected to under current laws.
