ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — Gregory Bovino, the Border Patrol commander responsible for a sweeping immigration enforcement initiative in Chicago, has stood by his agents' assertive measures, which have sparked a significant backlash from the community, including lawsuits and widespread protests.

From utilizing chemical agents to executing a helicopter raid on a residential building, Bovino asserts that these methods are justified responses to perceived threats in one of the nation's largest urban areas. I didn’t have any reason to think it would be this bad, but it’s far worse than I ever thought, Bovino stated in an interview, indicating the turmoil the operations have stirred up.

Since launching “Operation Midway Blitz” in September, over 3,200 individuals with alleged immigration violations have been apprehended. What began as targeted arrests within Latino communities has rapidly expanded throughout Chicago and its suburbs, extending even into Indiana.

Bovino likens the presence of Border Patrol agents patrolling Chicago to police overseeing city beats, referring to the franchise as sanctuary busters and insisting: There are no sanctuaries. There will be no sanctuaries. Fresh teams of agents have rotated in to continue the enforcement efforts, some arriving directly from crackdowns conducted in Los Angeles.

As for tactics employed, Bovino emphasized that deploying chemical agents is a strategy viewed as “far less lethal” than some alternatives. However, reports from residents depict a community on edge, with activists and ordinary citizens vocally opposing the aggressive tactics used against perceived threats. Incidents have arisen where agents confronted residents at courthouses and schools, moving far beyond traditional enforcement locations.

Governor Pritzker has criticized the Border Patrol’s actions, suggesting that the heightened militarization of federal agents has only exacerbated tensions in a city with deeply entrenched issues of trust and equity among its diverse populations. The federal agents' presence has increasingly drawn ire from local residents, resulting in charges of overreach and excessive force.

In the face of mounting political and social pressure, Bovino remains unapologetic, claiming the operations are a necessary measure in combating crime and immigration violations in the city. Despite mounting criticism, he is reluctant to disclose any timelines or future targets for the Border Patrol’s activities, maintaining the element of surprise is crucial for efficacy.
