Brazil Convicts Jair Bolsonaro’s Son Over US Lobbying Efforts

The son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced by the country’s Supreme Court to four years and two months in prison for lobbying U.S. officials to intervene in his father’s coup trial last year.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, 41, faced charges of seeking American support, including imposing tariffs and sanctions, in a bid to overturn the 2022 election defeat that led to a 27‑year sentence for his father.

He relocated to the United States in 2025, publicly calling the conviction “baseless” and claiming he was never formally served, only notified via media reports.

Brazil’s arrest illustrates deeper frictions: former President Donald Trump had labeled the Bolsonaro case a “witch hunt,” sanctions were imposed on Brazil in July, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged responses while the U.S. later withdrew sanctions following Lula’s warnings of judicial interference.

The convicted case adds a new layer to the political turbulence surrounding Jair Bolsonaro’s alleged coup plot against the 2023 government, a conflict that erupted after supporters stormed Brasília in January 2023.
