French Schools Spark Nationwide Protest, Police Deploy Tear Gas in Paris

On Wednesday, a wave of demonstrations erupted across France as high‑school pupils marched demanding more resources for schools and less police repression. The crowds swelled to include parents, university students and staff unions, creating a nationwide movement that has attracted hundreds of thousands of participants.

In Paris, protestors gathered near the Place de la République while the streets of Lyon, Marseille and Rennes also saw significant marches. Police in Paris and Marseille responded by dispersing crowds with tear gas, whereas in Rennes officers deployed water cannons in an attempt to control the protestors.

Despite the volatility of the demonstrations, clashes remained relatively contained compared with past protests. BBC Europe correspondent Nick Beake reports from Lille that the unrest, while intense, has largely stayed away from serious violence, leaving the government to address the underlying demands of the demonstrators.
