According to the Bern Cantonal police, the avalanche unfolded shortly after midday, necessitating a large-scale operation to locate and assist those trapped under the snow.

The Eiger, a 3,967 meter (13,000 ft) peak, is situated near popular tourist destinations such as Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Wengen.
