On a Friday morning, a passenger was reportedly left head‑first outside a cabin window on a Malta Air flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen after the window shattered mid‑air. Witnesses heard a loud bang and saw oxygen masks fall as a sudden decompression occurred. Ryanair confirmed that the aircraft returned to Thessaloniki, landed safely, and a passenger received medical aid on the ground. The Irish Aviation Authority is cooperating with Greek and Maltese authorities to investigate the incident.

According to witnesses, the man was in Thessaloniki, Greece, when the plane headed for Memmingen, Germany, experienced a sudden decompression. A loud bang was heard, the cabin window shattered, and oxygen masks fell from the ceiling.

Ryanair said the flight returned about ten minutes after take‑off after the passenger window dislodged in flight. The aircraft landed safely and passengers were escorted back to the terminal. One passenger received medical treatment on the ground in Thessaloniki.

Passengers recounted that a piece of the jet’s engine had apparently struck the window, causing the break. No official statement from Ryanair regarding the cause has been released yet.

The Irish Aviation Authority stated it was aware of the incident involving a Ryanair group aircraft and would cooperate with Greek and Maltese aviation safety authorities in the investigation.

This is the second serious incident involving a broken cabin window, following a 2018 Southwest Airlines flight that saw a passenger partially sucked out after engine damage.
