Police in Singapore have charged a 31‑year‑old migrant with posting a counterfeit AI‑made image of a saltwater crocodile in a popular reservoir.
Ye Lin deleted the photo and the software used, authorities say, after it triggered a two‑day suspension of activities at the country's largest water body, Pandan Reservoir.
The photo was circulated to a colleague via a messaging app, provoking panic and prompting water‑agency officials to launch a search and capture operation.
Police said the image was produced using artificial intelligence and that, after the authorities confirmed it was fabricated, the case was reported to the police.
Ye Lin is due back in court in November. If convicted, he faces up to seven years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to S$10,000, according to Singapore’s criminal statutes for false messaging and obstruction of justice.
The incident reflects growing concerns over AI‑generated visual content and its capacity to mislead the public.
