A Russian drone attack on a market in southern Ukraine has killed five people and injured 21, including a 14-year-old girl, the prosecutor general's office says.
The attack took place at 09:50 local time (06.50 GMT) in the town of Nikopol, just across the Dnipro river from land occupied by Russia since their full-scale invasion. Pictures published by the regional prosecutor show smashed market kiosks strewn with metal, glass, and food.
This assault follows a recent wave of violence, where at least 15 civilians lost their lives in drone and missile strikes across Ukraine. Amidst this chaos, a drone and missile attack by Ukraine on the southern Russian city of Taganrog also killed one person and seriously injured four.
Regional governor Yuri Slyusar confirmed that the Russian attack sparked a fire at a logistics company in Taganrog. Ukrainian officials have attributed the high civilian casualties to ongoing Russian air defense operations, while Kyiv has reported successful strikes on military-related factories within Russia.
Nikopol has frequently experienced assaults, pushing many of its residents to flee for safety, yet this drone strike during the busy Saturday market resulted in particularly high casualties. Two additional injuries were reported from a second strike at the same location, leading prosecutors to investigate these attacks as potential war crimes.
President Zelensky has offered a truce to Russia for the upcoming Easter celebrations, but Moscow has yet to respond. The Ukrainian air force reported that Russia launched nearly 300 drones in a recent attack, while Russia claimed to have shot down a significant number of Ukrainian drones. This escalation follows an increase in daytime operations by Russia, previously a rare occurrence, raising concerns about the ongoing conflict's trajectory and potential resolutions.
