At least seven people were killed in Russian strikes across Ukraine overnight, including five in the central city of Dnipro, where officials reported that an apartment building was targeted.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the assault lasted 'practically all night', with rescue workers still searching for survivors among the rubble on Saturday morning.
British jets were scrambled from Romania during the heavy attack when Russian drones were detected near the border, although the UK Ministry of Defence has denied claims of shooting any down.
In a retaliatory move, Ukraine has conducted some of its longest-distance drone strikes deep inside Russian territory. In Yekaterinburg, almost 1,000 miles from Ukraine's border, six people were reported injured following a strike.
Missiles and drones also hit the northern city of Chernihiv, resulting in two fatalities, as well as incidents in Odesa and Kharkiv.
The Ukrainian authorities managed to repel the majority of the more than 600 Russian drones, marking what appears to be the largest assault in several days.
Zelensky remarked on social media, noting the unchanged tactics of the Russians: 'strike drones, cruise missiles, and a significant amount of ballistics.' He added that the majority of the targets are 'ordinary infrastructure in cities', including residential buildings and energy facilities.
Russia's Ministry of Defence claimed to have shot down 127 drones across multiple regions. They also announced control over Bochkove, a village in the Kharkiv region, although the accuracy of this claim remains unverified.
In the meantime, Romania's defence ministry is investigating the fall of an unverified object on its territory near the Ukrainian border during the attacks.
With peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine at a standstill, Ukraine is actively seeking international assistance for its military operations. Recent discussions between Zelensky and Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman included air defense and joint military production cooperation, a clear reflection of the urgency of the situation.
