Trump claims Board of Peace has sealed Hamas disarmament deal
US President Donald Trump announced the Board of Peace has reached a provisional agreement for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza, labeling it a crucial step toward a new Palestinian government.
The agreement’s scope remains uncertain, as neither Hamas nor Israel has issued statements. Trump added that Israeli forces would withdraw once disarmament is accomplished, as part of a two‑phase US‑brokered ceasefire plan that also includes reconstruction of Gaza.
In a Truth Social post, he described the agreement as a milestone in the 20‑Point Plan, adding that “as disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to ensure the safety of Gaza’s residents and neighbours.”
Earlier this year, a senior Palestinian official told the BBC that Hamas had rejected a similar disarmament plan, raising doubts over the deal’s feasibility. The board, originally conceived to end the war, appears intent to replace functions of the UN without mentioning Gaza’s borders.
The conflict began with a Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 that killed 1,200 people and captured 251 hostages. Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has since resulted in over 73,000 casualties, including 21,280 children, according to the territory’s Hamas‑run health ministry.
