US President Donald Trump has said America's trade deal with the UK can always be changed. We gave them a good trade deal, better than I had to, the US president told Sky News when asked about the state of the special relationship.
Trump has criticized Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, especially since Starmer refused to support the US-Israel war against Iran in February, stating the relationship had been better.
Despite concerns, Trump asserted that the forthcoming state visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla would not be overshadowed by any difficulties in diplomatic relations.
When asked about the special relationship, Trump queried, With who? Upon clarification, he expressed disappointment that the UK had not been an ally when the US needed support. He reiterated this sentiment by stating, When we didn't need them, they were not there. And they still aren't there.
Trump acknowledged that the trade deal is favorable, yet declared it subject to changes if necessary. The UK was the first country to agree to a tariff deal with him post-2024, which included reductions on various imports.
The relationship has evidently strained recently, with Trump frequently critiquing Starmer's leadership during the conflicts in the Middle East, even labeling him as no Winston Churchill. Earlier in the interview, he remarked positively about Starmer but found fault in his immigration and energy policies, deeming them insane.
However, Trump confirmed that these tensions would not interfere with the upcoming royal state visit, noting, I've known the King for a long time, and he's not involved in that process. He looked forward to seeing the King during the visit.
