UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has stated he is not going to yield to pressure from US President Donald Trump regarding the conflict in Iran. Trump's recent comments to Sky News highlighted his dissatisfaction with the UK's perceived absence of support for the US, claiming, when we asked them for help, they were not there.
In response, Starmer reiterated during Prime Minister's Questions, I'm not going to change my mind, I'm not going to yield, it is not in our national interest to join this war and we will not do so.
Trump has criticized Starmer following his refusal to approve UK military involvement after hostilities erupted, maintaining that the UK should have taken a more active role. Furthermore, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has expressed her frustration towards Trump's decision to engage in the war, stating it lacked a clear exit strategy.
In her statement, Reeves emphasized the dire implications of the US's actions, mentioning, We did not start this war... It affects families here in the UK, as well as in the US and globally.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that the UK economy will suffer as a consequence of the conflict, adjusting growth estimates to a mere 0.8% this year as rising energy prices impact the economy.
Trump's remarks further strained the special relationship between the UK and the US, with his previous interactions with Starmer highlighting the complexities arising from differing stances on foreign policy. Despite acknowledging a personal appreciation for Starmer, he lamented the current state of US-UK relations, suggesting a notable decline since his previous term in office.
