US House Blocks Trump’s Iran War Plans: A Rare Congressional Thrust

In an unprecedented display of bipartisan cooperation, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 215‑208 to adopt a resolution that would end President Donald Trump’s ability to launch further military actions against Iran without explicit congressional approval. Four Republican members joined the Democratic caucus to oppose the war that began in February, marking the fourth congressional attempt to rein in President Trump’s extended war‑powers in the 2026 hawkish environment.

The resolution demands that any future U.S. military operation in Iran be vetted by Congress. It counters the president’s claims that negotiations are “very well” and could be closed before the week’s end, after a ceasefire agreement was reportedly reached. Yet, days before the vote, Capitol Hill observers reported that both sides have continued exchanging strikes.

Key Republican votes came from Senators Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett, and Warren Davidson, who joined Democrats’ bipartisan front. Democrat Jared Golden of Maine, who had previously opposed similar measures, switched sides and marked the resolution with a supportive vote.

The Senate, which has passed a parallel resolution in May, must now decide whether to adopt the House version. Even if the Senate passes it, the measure may not wholly curtail Iranian warfare, and a presidential veto would still be possible. Should Trump veto the bill, it would require a two‑thirds majority in both chambers to override.

The resolution’s passage underscores congressional frustration over the President’s unilateral military decisions that bypass established war‑powers oversight. The moment also highlights the House’s willingness to act on foreign affairs when leadership steps in the wrong direction.
