Xi Jinping Hosts Putin Amid Global Power Shift
Cheering children - check. Military honour guard – check. Cannon fire and marching band - check.
Vladimir Putin's welcome outside the Great Hall of the People mirrors the reception for Donald Trump just a week earlier. These back-to-back high-stakes presidential visits serve as a strategic display of Xi Jinping's desire to project China as a diplomatic hub.
For China, these meetings signify its massive economy's ability to draw global attention. Samir Puri from King’s College London observes, The new era of world affairs is less centered around the West, emphasizing the shift in international relations.
However, the diplomatic atmosphere reflects that Xi’s relations with both leaders are driven by distinct narratives. While Putin's dependency on Beijing has increased due to sanctions and the ongoing war in Ukraine, Xi’s management of relationships reveals a burgeoning power dynamic.
The recent talks resulted in 20 agreements on trade and technology but fell short of resolving the stalled major Russian gas pipeline project. Analysts like Dr. Zheng Runyu note, Both China and Russia need each other, but Russia clearly needs China more than before at the global stage. This is suggestive of an evolving and potentially unequal partnership.
Despite the display of gravitas, Xi's meetings with the two Western leaders were telling; in both cases, he faced leaders ensnared in protracted wars that have defined their tenures. Xi's ability to set the tone is reflective of China’s current standing, allowing it to negotiate from a position of strength.
This week has been a triumph for Xi’s long-promised vision to rejuvenate the nation. However, it also highlights the limitations of China’s stature, with scrutiny on its handling of the Ukraine situation.
As China calls for an end to geopolitical conflicts but remains silent on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Xi’s credibility might come into question as to whether China can genuinely act as an objective global player.
In discussing conflicts, Xi only mentioned the urgency of resolving the crisis in the Middle East while skirting around Russia's actions. This strategy might jeopardize China’s newly fostered relationships, especially with Europe.
In a nutshell, while Xi Jinping basked in the diplomatic spotlight, the ongoing challenge remains significant as he navigates the complexities of global power dynamics.
