Olaolukitan Adon Abel, a man charged in a horrific string of shootings near Atlanta that resulted in three fatalities, was found dead in jail on Tuesday night. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the 26-year-old Navy veteran was unresponsive in his cell when guards checked on him.

Despite efforts to resuscitate Abel, he was declared dead shortly thereafter. The official cause of death is still under investigation, though authorities do not suspect foul play, leading to an internal review of the circumstances surrounding his death.

Abel had been charged with the murders of Prianna Weathers and Lauren Bullis, a Department of Homeland Security employee who was tragically killed while walking her dog. Additionally, Abel was facing another potential murder charge regarding Tony Mathews, who was injured in the attack and passed away shortly after.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shootings, and it remains unclear whether Abel had any prior connection to the victims. Police suspect that at least one of the individuals may have been targeted at random.

Represented by a public defender, Abel’s death not only prevents him from contesting the charges in court but also leaves the families of the victims without closure and answers about these tragic events.

“We deeply regret that the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims are now left without the full answers a public legal process might have provided,” the state council that oversees public defenders stated.

Abel faced multiple charges, including malice murder and federal gun possession charges stemming from a previous felony conviction. Just prior to the shootings, roommates reported that he had stormed out after a heated argument about air conditioning in their shared home.

Originally from the United Kingdom, Abel had been granted U.S. citizenship in 2022 during his service in the Navy in San Diego. His past includes a guilty plea in 2024 for assaulting police officers, which was related to struggles with mental health.

His attorney noted that mental health issues were central to Abel's prior legal predicament, contributing to a complex personal history that raises questions about mental health support and preventative measures for such incidents.

As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the impact of these tragic shootings and the unanswered questions that Abel's death leaves in its wake.
