HAMMONTON, N.J. (AP) — A midair collision between two helicopters in New Jersey resulted in one fatality and left another person critically injured. The event has raised concerns and sparked an investigation by federal authorities.
Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel reported that emergency responders were dispatched to the scene around 11:25 a.m. on Sunday, where they encountered flames engulfing one of the helicopters. The crash involved an Enstrom F-28A helicopter and an Enstrom 280C helicopter, both of which had only the pilots on board at the time of the incident.
While video footage captured the terrifying moment of a helicopter spinning downward, rescuers managed to extinguish the fire swiftly. Sadly, one pilot succumbed to injuries at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Hammonton, a small town with a population of approximately 15,000, is situated in Atlantic County, approximately 35 miles southeast of Philadelphia. Known for its agricultural history and proximity to the expansive Pine Barrens, Hammonton is now the focal point of a federal investigation.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified and are set to launch a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to this tragic midair collision.
