An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer has shot a man in the leg in the US city of Minneapolis, where tensions have been running high since an ICE agent shot dead a woman last week.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that federal officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop when a Venezuelan national was shot after resisting arrest and assaulting an officer.

US officials conveyed to CBS News that the man was shot following an attack on an ICE officer with a shovel.

Protests erupted again near the scene, compelling city officials to appeal for calm. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey characterized the situation as unsustainable.

Tensions over immigration enforcement have surged since the January 7 shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent, sparking protests across several cities.

The injured man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while an ICE officer was also hospitalized. As fresh clashes flared, Minneapolis city officials remarked on X that they understood the public's anger and urged calm.

Amid the increasing unrest, the city reiterated its demand for ICE to leave Minneapolis and stated that three individuals were involved in the incident, leading the officer to fire defensive shots out of fear for his life.

The FBI is investigating this shooting, as Mayor Frey criticized federal officers for creating chaos in the state.
