Record Heatwave Sweeps Through Western Europe
The heatwave that started on June 18 has pushed temperatures across France, Italy, Spain, and other western European countries to record highs. In France alone, officials have confirmed forty fatalities linked to the extreme heat.
Temperatures in cities such as Nice peak between 30°C and 35°C (86°F–95°F), prompting the local authorities to issue a very high heat alert. Similar caps have been set in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and the Mediterranean coast.
Governments have mobilised emergency response teams, increased public cooling centres, and advised citizens to stay hydrated, avoid midday outdoor work, and watch out for vulnerable residents. Despite these measures, the heat continues to pose a serious risk.
