Al Jazeera has condemned the killing of one of its Palestinian journalists in an Israeli strike in the Gaza Strip, describing it as a deliberate and targeted crime.
Mohammed Wishah, a correspondent for the Al Jazeera Mubasher channel, and another Palestinian were killed in a drone strike on a vehicle in Gaza City, according to reports from the Qatar-based network and local health officials.
The Israeli military claimed that Wishah was a Hamas terrorist and justified the strike by saying he posed a threat to its forces in the area.
While there was no immediate response from Al Jazeera, both the network and Hamas have denied any affiliation between Wishah and the armed group.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the killing of Wishah in the strongest possible terms. He is the 11th Al Jazeera journalist to be killed since the beginning of the ongoing conflict.
Witnesses reported that Wishah was traveling with another person along Gaza's coastal road when their vehicle was struck by an Israeli missile, with videos showing the vehicle engulfed in flames.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that its troops targeted Wishah, accusing him of being involved in terrorist activities, and linked him to Hamas operations under the guise of journalism.
New evidence presented by the IDF included photographs allegedly showing Wishah handling weapons, which had been seized during previous operations.
In its statement, Al Jazeera asserted it would take legal action to hold accountable those responsible for targeting journalists, calling for justice amidst a backdrop of increasing fatalities in Gaza.
Media rights organization Reporters Without Borders noted that more than 220 reporters have been killed in Gaza over recent years amid the conflict, highlighting the urgent need for protective measures for journalists operating in war zones.
Both local and international media outlets have relied heavily on local reporters in Gaza, especially as Israel restricts foreign journalists from entering the area.
The conflict escalated following a Hamas-led attack in October 2023 that ignited widespread violence, prompting Israel to initiate military operations that have resulted in significant casualties, including civilian deaths.
