DENVILLE, N.J. (AP) — In a significant political victory, Democrat Analilia Mejia won the special election for the U.S. House in New Jersey's 11th District on Thursday, defeating Republican Joe Hathaway. Mejia emphasized her campaign message of standing up to former President Donald Trump, whose leadership she criticized vigorously.
Former leader of the Working Families Alliance and prominent progressive figure, Mejia received notable endorsements from influential politicians, including Vermont U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders. She succeeds Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill, filling the seat until January.
Mejia's win reinforces Democratic hold despite the district's previous reputation as a GOP stronghold, marking a continuation of the party's successful trend in recent electoral races. According to the Associated Press, Mejia's election was called just minutes after polls closed.
Her campaign framed the election as a referendum on Trump's policies. She particularly criticized his pardons for individuals tied to the January 6 attacks and condemned his decision to freeze previously allocated funds by Congress.
“The people here are ready to do something about it,” Mejia said recently. “We’re not here to write strongly worded letters. Congress has real power.”
Hathaway aimed to leverage Mejia's progressive platform against her, characterizing her views as overly leftist, while rallying local conservative support.
Notably, the 11th District, covering parts of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties, has seen a demographic shift towards more Democratic-leaning voters since Trump's initial presidency. This election follows a broader Democratic strategy that successfully flipped numerous seats during the midterm elections in 2018, and was further solidified in 2024 when Sherrill won re-election by a significant margin.
The dynamic of Mejia's campaign indicates a potential showdown with Hathaway again in the upcoming full-term elections in November. With Hernandez's progressive agenda, which includes initiatives to abolish ICE and advocate for comprehensive social changes, the political landscape in New Jersey's 11th District remains a focal point leading into 2024.
Mejia, a seasoned advocate for progressive causes with a background in the Biden administration and labor issues, remains a pivotal figure in New Jersey's political scene. As the election strategies unfold, both candidates are poised to address shifting voter sentiments in this critical suburban district.
