Sustained heavy gunfire and loud explosions have been heard near the international airport outside the capital of Niger, Niamey.
Multiple eyewitness accounts and videos depicted air defense systems engaging unidentified projectiles in the early hours of Thursday. The situation later calmed down, with reports indicating that officials considered the situation was now under control, although no specific details were provided.
The cause of the blasts remains unclear, and there have been no official statements regarding potential casualties from the military government.
The gunfire and blasts began shortly after midnight, alarming residents living proximate to the airport, which houses an air force base and is located about 10 kilometers from the presidential palace.
One local mentioned that shots had been directed at planes from outside the airport, while others recounted their fear amidst the sounds of gunfire and explosions. We didn't sleep last night. Our room and the whole house were shaking from the gunshots and explosions, said a terrified resident.
Other unconfirmed reports suggest that unidentified assailants may have thrown explosive devices toward the airport before exchanging fire with security forces. As a result, several flights scheduled to arrive in Niamey have been diverted.
Security has tightened around the airport, and supporters of the military government have reportedly taken to the streets of Niamey to show their backing for the authorities.
Niger recently experienced a coup, leading to a military-led government. As tensions with jihadist groups continue, these developments signal further challenges for security in the region, which is already grappling with significant geopolitics, including concerns over uranium resources and foreign relations, especially with France.
